History of Gampaha Divisional Secretariat


A Brief Description of Gampaha Secretariat Division

When Sinhala Kingdom moved to southwest the evidence says that the security zone of kings was the surrounding areas  of Gampaha. The main harbour louring Kotte reign was Negombo Lagoon. It appears that Negombo and Gampaha become major cities.

During Portuguese reign the route to upcountry was via Gampaha. During Dutch period Gampaha was a collecting center for cinnamon. These two factors gave prominence to Gampaha. With the extension of the railway track to Ambepussa during the tenure of the Governor sir Henry Ward and introduction of rubber plant with Gampaha Botanical garden at the center but the Governor Sir William Gregory Gampaha gave special recognition. There is evidence to the fact that Governor Manning added a lot of urban features to Gampaha.

With this background, Gampaha District, which was part of Colombo District, was a officially made a separate district in 1978 and the main administrative center was established in Gampaha. It became the principal city and was the number of all the activities.

97.5 square kilo meters around Gampaha city is known as Gampaha Secretarial Division. The main secretarial and a lot of other government offices are located within Gampaha.

The annual rain fall is about 2500mm and the average temperature is about 27.9°C . The soil in mainly red and yellow podsolic and the major sources of water are Attanagalu Oya and Uruwela Oya. Major anicuts here are six in number.

Special mention should be made about Ketawala and Morenna projects that come under the key irrigation scheme. Morenna project has been improved will Japanese aids. 1955 hectares are under paddy cultivation and 1425 hectares are under rubber cultivation. In addition pineapple, plantation and Fruit, Vegetable and betel are grown here. Rural industries like pottery, gold and silverware, tiles, bricks, handloom textiles, cane ware, coconut related products and quarries are found here. Large scale factories Lanka Steel (Lanka Loha) are situated in this District.

Gampaha Base Hospital, Yakkala Ayurveda Medical College are major institutions health. Further, Gampaha city is the home for the offices of 75 government institutions.

A city is a place where, administration, health, education, commerce, judiciary and culture are effectively provided to the public, Gampaha has all these. Gampaha city, which has land area of 25.8 hectares, expands linking smaller towns Yakkala and Miriswatta. Building commercial hubs  which facilitates new services and building urban belts is common to Gampaha as well. According to the central index prepared by UDA Gampaha city develops around 95% although the population is less than in Negombo
